Actuary most appealing job of 2010

Thursday 7th January 2010

Being an actuary is the best overall job to have, while oil rig roustabout is the worst, a new survey has suggested.

Employment website careercast.com rated 200 jobs according to several factors, and then ranked them from best to worst overall.

Factors included income, stress levels, work environment, physical demands, and danger levels, among others.

The job of actuary, someone who determines risk levels for various ailments and mishaps by analysing statistics, came first as the best overall job.

Andrew Streiber, who published the findings, said: "Of course every employee is different, and what you consider a 'dream job' might be someone else's idea of a career nightmare.

"Because of this, a simple ranking may not be enough – you need to know what a particular job is really like on a day-to-day basis.

"If you're the type who cares a lot about income but doesn't mind stress, for example, public relations executive might be a great career for you."

Public relations executive ranks 19th for median income, but 193rd for stress.
Other notable job rankings include philosopher (11th), forklift operator (67th), janitor (83rd), member of clergy (96th), teacher (116th), undertaker (134th) and police officer (180th).

Newspaper reporter ranks 184th, just behind sailor and industrial machinist.
