BA probes suspension of staff who 'intimidated volunteers'
Friday 12th February 2010
British Airways has reportedly suspended 15 members of staff after announcing it said it will not tolerate the "intimidation" of employees. The staff allegedly made comments on the union Unite's website about volunteer staff training to be cabin crew in case planned strike action goes ahead.
The airline and Unite have been in a long-running dispute after BA made changes to the pay and conditions of cabin crew. The union is currently balloting members of BA for strike action, after a planned strike due over Christmas was prevented from taking place by a high court ruling.
The union deemed BA's action today a "cyberspace witch-hunt"; adding that the "intimidating" comments were made by staff on Facebook, not the Unite website, saying it would "vigorously defend" its members.
Unite has called BA's changes "draconian" and said last week after the airline reported better than expected third quarter figures that "recovery is within the airline's grasp, but this will be hampered if BA persists with its aggressive attacks on a key workforce, its cabin crew".
Len McCluskey, Unite assistant general secretary, said: "While BA is not out of the woods yet, it is turning the corner. This ought to make it more flexible in reaching a negotiated settlement with its cabin crew."
