Banks cause FTSE 100 to slump in afternoon trading

The FTSE 100 suffered a significant slump on Tuesday afternoon, falling over a half a per cent, caused in the main by falls in the banking sector.At the close of play the London index stood at 5,672.32 a drop of 38.34 points or 0.67 per cent.
Inmarsat suffered the biggest loss of the day, sliding 5.64 per cent to 752.5p.
The main banks also fell, with Royal Bank of Scotland Group slipping 3.39 per cent, Lloyds Banking Group down 2.99 per cent and Barclays falling 2.41 per cent.
Amec, the oil services provider, was by far and away the best performer on the day up 3.2 per cent to 790.5p.
Legal and General Group and Schroders also rose 1.09 per cent and one per cent respectively.
