Banks help FTSE 100 close half a per cent up on Wednesday

A strong banking performance helped the FTSE 100 close up over half a per cent on Thursday, although pharmaceutical shares again proved a drag.By close of play the leading share index was up 0.52 per cent, or 27.83 points, on 5,342.92.
Cruise group Carnival led the gains at 3.54 per cent, followed by Lloyds Banking Group on 3.40 per cent.
HSBC Holdings and Rolls-Royce Group were up 2.46 per cent and 2.09 per cent respectively meanwhile.
On the downside, builders merchant Wolseley slipped 3.13 per cent, far and away the largest loser on Wednesday.
Johnson Matthey slipped 1.83 per cent, while Reckitt Benckiser, facing a potentially massive fine over claims it intentionally withdrew its Gaviscon liquid from the NHS prescription channel, was down 1.52 per cent.
