Thursday 24th December 2009
Bernie Madoff, the disgraced Wall Street financier, has been moved to a hospital in prison. The 71-year-old is serving a 150 year sentence for fraud, after pleading guilty to a $65 billion (£41 billion) fraud through a Ponzi scheme.
It is not yet known why Madoff has been transferred to the medical centre, but a spokesperson for the prison has said he was transferred there on December 18th.
A few weeks ago prison authorities rejected rumors that Madoff had been diagnosed with cancer.
The extent of his crimes was revealed during the height of the economic crisis when investors collectively attempted to withdraw around $7 billion, but he was unable to produce the money.
