Britain 'still not out of recession'
Wednesday 14th October 2009
Suggestions Britain emerged from recession in the third quarter of this year have been questioned by a leading business group. The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) said while confidence was improving the economy as a whole was still "frail".
The survey of 5,500 companies found confidence was at some of its highest levels since the beginning of last year.
However the BCC warned declining sales and orders suggested the economy was still suffering.
Official GDP figures are set to be released next week.
The BCC's chief economist, David Kern, said: "The third-quarter results support our assessment that the UK economy is on the brink of leaving recession.
"However, the improvement is not sufficiently strong to allow us to conclude without doubt that GDP has already returned to positive growth. The economy is still frail."
