Friday 13th November 2009

The FTSE 100 rose 0.15 per cent in early trading on Friday to 5,284.24 led by metals refiner Johnson Matthey and British Airways.

Shares in Johnson Matthey were up by 3.48 per cent, while British Airways rose by 2.74 per cent by 09:30 GMT after confirming merger talks with Iberia.

The index has been struggling to break through the 5,300 ceiling over the last week and this morning several stocks continued to hold the FTSE 100 down.

Stock broker ICAP lost 3.28 per cent after a rival posted a sales decline, while shares in Rexam, the world's biggest beverage can maker, dipped 3.11 per cent on a cautious outlook.

Mining stocks were also falling on the index. Eurasian Natural Resources fell by 1.43 per cent, while Kazakhmys was down by 1.02 per cent and Vedanta Resources dropped by 0.92 per cent.

Over in the US, a drop in oil prices hit trading on Wall Street.

The Dow Jones closed lower, falling 0.9 per cent, while the S&P 500 dipped one per cent.ADNFCR-1783-ID-19458640-ADNFCR
