British Airways cabin crew strikes enter third day
Monday 22nd March 2010
Strikes by British Airways (BA) cabin crew have entered their third day today, with further disruption for passengers.Today is the last day, and busiest, of the first set of two strikes planned by members of the union Unite, with the second due to take place from March 27th for four days.
Both the airline and the union claim they are winning the 'strike war', which came about after BA made changes to pay and conditions of staff as well as a number of job losses.
Unite claims the airline's "much-vaunted contingencies plans are failing" and that of the 77 flights scheduled 37 have been empty, 37 are "contingency" (ready to go but lacking crew members) and only three are running as normal.
The union also said in a statement this morning that there are BA "managers dressed as crew wandering round car park and have been told to look as if coming into work" and "BA offering strike breakers £100 in taxis each way i.e. - into work and then out".
However, the airline has said its contingency plans are "going well", and said cabin crew were still coming into work. But the strike is expected to cost the airline millions in lost revenue, and passengers have expressed anger at the disruption.
The strike was officially announced on Friday after talks between the union and airline broke down.
A spokesperson for Number 10 said following the announcement on Friday: "The prime minister believes that this strike is in no-one's interest and will cause unacceptable inconvenience to passengers.
"He urges the strike be called off immediately. He also urges BA's management and workforce to get together without delay to resolve what is a dispute about jobs and wages."
