British Airways cabin crew vote in favour of for strike action
Tuesday 23rd February 2010
British Airways cabin crew have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action over job security, pay and working conditions. An official strike ballot result from Unite the trade union said a substantial number of staff had voted for industrial action.
Len McCluskey, assistant general secretary of Unite, told a press conference in central London that no strike dates had been set so far, although the earliest date they could begin is March 1st and walkouts over Easter have already been ruled out.
"We're asking everyone to keep calm," he said.
"We're asking the BA management to recognise they have lost the trust of an important group of their employees. And the way to regain that trust is to listen to their grievances."
Last year BA cabin crew voted in favour of strike action over the Christmas period over the same issues.
But severe travel chaos was avoided when the high court ruled the vote was illegal.
Earlier today 4,000 pilots at German airline Lufthansa began four days of strike action over pay and job security.
