Brits 'pay highest petrol prices in Europe'
Monday 11th August 2008
According to research conducted by price comparison site uSwitch.com, UK drivers are currently paying on average up to £350 more for petrol each year than residents of other parts of the EU.
This equates to an extra 12 per cent each time they fill up their tank.
However, according to the site this figure actually represents a narrowing between the price paid in the UK and elsewhere, with Britons having paid up to a fifth more at times over the last eight years.
A statement from uSwitch.com read: "In fact, since the year 2000, UK motorists have consistently paid 20 per cent more for their petrol and diesel compared to drivers from the other four largest European countries.
"By contrast, the Spanish pay 16 per cent less for petrol than anyone else at just 96p per litre."
Evidence of the disproportionately high petrol prices in the UK have come at a time when consumers are already struggling with higher repayments on mortgage and credit card debt as well as sky-high grocery and energy bills.
Experts predict that the combined effect of these factors will fuel a surge in demand for professional debt help this year, including debt advice on solutions such as debt consolidation loans and individual voluntary arrangements (IVAs).
