Consumers urged to practise debt managementTuesday 13th January 2009

British people have been advised to manage their debts by keeping a detailed record of their outgoing payments.

Carl Kroger, sales and marketing director at the Relax Group, said that monitoring payments in this way can help people to separate necessary and non-essential expenditure.

However, he also admitted that more "drastic action", such as seeking debt advice from a professional, may be required for those with particularly large debts.

"Putting pen to paper really is the first step in managing finances. If the debt isn't too large and is easily managed, begin by cutting down on luxuries and non-essential purchases," Mr Kroger said.

For people with bigger debt problems, he added: "Debt management advice will help establish a plan that will sort out the whole debt problem in one programme that's personal to the individual."

The Relax Group offers a number of services in the Bournemouth area, such as massage and help with household chores.
