Daimler accused of paying bribes to foreign governments
Wednesday 24th March 2010
Daimler, the German-based car company which makes Mercedes Benz vehicles, could face fines after being accused of paying bribes to foreign governments. Some reports suggest the manufacturer has agreed to pay $185 million (£124 million) in fines to settle the corruption allegations.
The allegations have been seen in court papers filed in the US. Prosecutors have accused the company of paying millions of dollars in bribes to officials of, reportedly, 22 governments. Reports suggest the company's German and Russian subsidiaries could plead guilty to criminal charges.
"In some cases Daimler wired these improper payments to US bank accounts or to the foreign bank accounts of US shell companies in order to transmit the bribe," the court papers are reported to have said.
Allegedly the funds were used to secure deal with foreign governments to buy Daimler vehicles, with payments reportedly made to officials in countries including China, Iraq, Nigeria, Russia, and Vietnam.
The firm has previously acknowledged payments that raised legal concerns. US law prohibits firms which operate in the country from making improper payments to officials of other countries.
