Darling announces tax on cider
Thursday 25th March 2010
Alistair Darling has announced duty on cider will increase by ten per cent above inflation from midnight on Sunday. The chancellor's announcement in his final Budget before the general election is being seen as an attempt to address fears supermarket brands of cider have become so cheap they were contributing to binge drinking.
Mr Darling confirmed smokers will also be hit by a tax rise, with tobacco duty rising by one per cent with immediate affect.
Tobacco duty will also rise by two per cent in real terms every year until 2014.
The chancellor confirmed a one per cent in duty on beer, wine and spirits will also come into effect at the weekend, adding two pence to a pint, ten pence on a bottle of wine and 36p on a bottle of spirits.
Alcohol duties will rise at two per cent above inflation for two more years from 2013.
Mike Benner from the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), chief executive responded to Wednesday's announcement, saying: "Today's budget is a charter for the large supermarkets who irresponsibly promote alcohol as a loss leader at the expense of our nation's community pubs, real ale and responsible pub goers.
"CAMRA is totally at a loss in understanding how a government that recognises the community value of pubs can impose such consistently draconian beer duty increases.
"This is a further tax raid on responsible beer drinkers and community pubs.
"Hitting small real cider producers with this hike will cause irreparable damage to one of the nation's most historic craft industries. The government must introduce a relief package to support the UK's small cider producers."
