Three in five safety representatives of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) said that overwork or stress was a concern in their workplace, according to research published by the group this week.
Some 81 per cent of stress cases were reported in central government, followed by education on 74 per cent and health services on 69 per cent, the survey found.
It comes after the Financial Services Authority this week released statistics showing that 11,054 homes were repossessed during the second quarter of 2008, which represented a 71 per cent increase on the same period last year.
Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC, said: "Stress casts a gloomy shadow over far too many UK workplaces. And as the current economic crisis creates more anxiety about job security, stress is likely to increase."
