Debt-hit Brits hit hardest by energy price hikes

Debt-hit Brits hit hardest by energy price hikesTuesday 24th June 2008

Debt hit consumers are going without heating and power as the higher cost of living continues to squeeze household finances, it has been claimed.

According to Scott Byrom, utilities manager at moneysupermarket.com, the increases imposed on gas and electricity has meant that thousands of people with pre-pay meters, which are typically in low income groups, are now unable to afford to meet the costs.

Mr Byrom said: "Rising energy costs have caused 14 per cent of gas customers and nine per cent of electricity customers on pre-payment meters to ‘self-disconnect' and go without heating and power because they cannot afford to pay for their energy.

"Pre-payment customers should not be punished for using this type of meter."

Research conducted by the site found that the average pre-payment tariff is £150 more expensive than the best value rate available from energy suppliers.

Earlier this year all of the UK's so-called big six energy companies introduced double digit hikes to their fuel tariffs.
