Debt-hit shoppers flock to budget supermarketsFriday 27th June 2008

Debt-hit Britons are shopping in discount supermarkets in increasing numbers, as they look to limit the impact of soaring food price inflation on their household budgets.

According to new figures, Lidl has posted a 12.8 per cent increase in customers in the 12 weeks to June this year.

Meanwhile, rival retailer Aldi has experienced an even more marked increase in footfall, with customer numbers up by 20.7 per cent.

The figures come amid skyrocketing food prices which have seen family food bills rise by 21 per cent.

The impact the hikes in the cost of living are having on families was borne out by a rise in the number of households opting for debt management solutions between January and May.

TDX Group recently revealed that over this period 2,517 households took out an individual voluntary arrangement (IVA).

This represents a rise of 32.3 per cent from the same period last year.
