FTSE 100 continues upward in early trade

Friday 19th June 2009

The FTSE 100 rose 0.56 per cent in early trading to 4,304.90, building on yesterday's slight gains.

Led by Lonmin, which was up by 3.55 per cent, the index crept up on an overnight rally on the US markets.

Last night the Dow Jones finished 0.69 per cent higher, while the S&P 500 closed 0.05 per cent up.

On the UK's leading share index, several stocks that have faced sharp falls recently staged tentative recoveries, including cruise firm Carnival and British Airways, both up by 2.16 per cent.

Many were still in the red, however, including Sage Group, down by 1.18 per cent and medical products firm Smith & Nephew, down by 1.14 per cent.
