The FTSE 100 fell 0.49 per cent to 4,872.16 by 08:45 BST on a flat end to trading on Wall Street last night.The mining sector reversed recent gains, with Xstrata down by 3.96 per cent and Kazakhmys falling by 3.37 per cent.
Vodafone led the risers on the index, up by 1.22 per cent after JPMorgan upgraded the telecoms sector to "overweight".
Defensives were also trading higher on the index, with Severn Trent up by 0.94 per cent, United Utilities up by 0.71 per cent and GlaxoSmithKline up by 0.46 per cent.
In the US, the Dow Jones closed 0.03 per cent higher, while the S&P 500 ended 0.05 per cent down.
