FTSE 100 down on opening

Traders in London saw the FTSE 100 fall 0.25 per cent this morning at 9:43 BST – down to 5,441.10.

Record results from BHP Billiton saw the miners and oil firms do well.

Anglo American rose 2.16 per cent to 2794p, Tullow Oil was up 1.85 per cent, Petrofac gained 1.67 per cent, Antofagasta climbed 1.40 per cent and Rio Tinto was up 1.32 per cent.

Leading the losers was London Stock Exchange Group – down 4.42 per cent – as the growth of rivals on the equities market grows.

Builders merchant Wolseley was down 3.25 per cent, British Airways fell 3.07 per cent, Carnival dropped 2.97 per cent and Ferrexpo lost 2.96 per cent.

On the currency markets sterling was up 0.14 per cent against the dollar to $1.86712. Against the euro, the pound was down to €1.26715, making €1 worth £ 0.78885.

In Europe, the Cac 40 and Dax were down 0.95 per cent and 0.84 per cent respectively.
