FTSE 100 ends week up

Friday 9th October 2009

The FTSE 100 closed up 0.14 per cent on Friday, ending another positive week.

At the close of play, the FTSE 100 was up 7.23 points to 5,161.87.

Over the week, the index gained 3.47 per cent.

The end of the week saw a rag-tag group of gains – with private equity group 3i leading the way up 4.34 per cent.

B&Q owner Kingfisher rose 2.82 per cent, Unilever climbed 2.66 per cent and Standard Life was up 2.37 per cent.

Meanwhile, software group Autonomy was down 2.37 per cent on as a level of profit taking took over.

Platinum group metal producer Johnson Matthey lost 1.95 per cent and Tullow Oil lost 1.71 per cent.

London Stock Exchange group and Vodafone both lost 1.60 per cent.

Philip Gillett, sales trader at IG Index, said: "It has been a quiet end to the week for stock markets, with the major indices just consolidating the gains seen over the past few days.

"The FTSE 100 index has ended the week around three per cent higher than last week’s finish suggesting that although momentum has dropped off over the past few weeks, there still seems to be a willingness to buy into a short-lived weakness."

Over in New York, the Dow was up 0.23 per cent to 9,809.84 by 12:07 EDT (17:07 BST) and the S&P 500 was up 0.03 per cent in Chicago.ADNFCR-1783-ID-19402863-ADNFCR
