The FTSE 100 crept higher again in early trade, rising 0.5 per cent to 4,570.36 by 08:45 BST, led by BT Group.BT jumped 12.69 per cent to lead the index after a fall in first quarter profits was less than expected.
Rolls Royce also saw a rise in shares, up 5.26 per cent, after announcing increased first-half profit, while shares in investment firm Schroders rose by 5.23 per cent.
However, several stocks were in the red, offsetting the gains.
Publisher Reed Elsevier said it would issue new shares to pay down debt and lowered earnings expectations for the year, sending shares down 15.41 per cent.
Over in the US, the Dow Jones fell by 0.29 per cent, while the S&P 500 closed 0.46 per cent lower, amid worries over China's economic growth potential.
