FTSE 100 holds as miners gain

The FTSE 100 held firm in early trading today with miners providing a strong backbone for the index.At 8:51 BST, the UK blue chip index was up 0.13 per cent to 4,824.04 a gain of 6.49 points.
Miners held the index up with Randgold Reserves leading gains, up 5.69 per cent.
Lonmin rose 4.34 per cent, Fresnillo climbed 3.48 per cent, Vedanta was up 2.94 per cent and Kazakhmys gained 2.93 per cent.
Barclays led the fallers down 1.53 per cent - while RSA Insurance slipped 1.45 per cent.
Schroders Non-Voting dropped 1.25 per cent and Experian was down 1.07 per cent.
Smith & Nephew was down 0.96 per cent.
Last night in New York, the Dow was down 0.32 per cent while the S&P 500 in Chicago followed suit down 0.33 per cent.
On the currency markets, sterling was up 0.22 per cent against the dollar to $1.6309 and was firm against the euro up 0.03 per cent to 1.141.
