FTSE 100 rises back over 5,000

The FTSE 100 climbed back over the 5,000 mark in early trading today following gains in the US last night.At 8:47 BST, the London blue chip index was up 0.48 per cent to 5,011.68 a gain of 24 points.
Last night in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 0.84 per cent to 9,627.48. Chicago's S&P 500 rose 1.04 per cent.
Leading the gains in London was hedge fund Man Group rising 4.00 per cent as confidence in the sector resumed.
Builders merchant Wolseley was up 2.78 per cent, Smith & Nephew climbed 2.68 per cent and Marks & Spencer rose 2.54 per cent.
Miner Xstrata rose 2.22 per cent.
Balfour Beatty was down 0.78 per cent as the number of stocks dropping were thin on the ground.
Friends Provident dropped 0.72 per cent, as did British American Tobacco.
Shire lost 0.67 per cent.
On the currency markets, sterling was up 0.23 per cent against the dollar and 0.09 per cent against the euro making £1 worth $1.6689 and 1.1430.
