The FTSE 100 rose 0.23 per cent to 4,602.56 by 08:30 BST, led by Lloyds Banking Group.Financial stocks led the way, with Lloyds Banking Group up by 2.23 per cent to 85.19p, after naming former Citigroup head Sir Win Bischoff as its new chairman.
Schroders rose 1.94 per cent on the index, while Legal and General was up by 1.33 per cent.
Commodities were also trading higher, and BG Group was up by 1.9 per cent in early trade, while Vedanta Resources was up by one per cent.
A mixture of travel, mining and technology stocks offset the gains, however.
Randgold Resources fell by 3.17 per cent, Invensys dropped 0.87 per cent, Thomas Cook was down by 0.79 per cent and TUI Travel dipped 0.68 per cent.
Over in the US, the Dow Jones closed higher after a late rally sparked by improved home sales data. The index ended 0.17 per cent up, while the S&P 500 closed 0.3 per cent higher.
