The FTSE 100 rose 0.42 per cent in early trading to 4,547.92 after yesterday's falls, as defensive stocks offset falls in the mining sector.Investment firm Schroders led the rise with a 6.16 per cent jump by 08:50 BST, followed by Eurasian Natural Resources, up by 3.12 per cent, and Aviva, up by 2.64 per cent.
Defensive stocks in tobacco, medical and food and drinks sectors were also rising on the index.
Imperial Tobacco Group was up by 1.78 per cent, Smith and Nephew rose 1.82 per cent and Diageo was up by 1.66 per cent.
However, drink can manufacturer Rexam was still in the red, down by 4.62 per cent, followed by Petrofac, sliding 1.74 per cent, and Anglo American, down by 1.61 per cent.
In the US, a dip in consumer confidence led to a 0.13 per cent fall on the Dow Jones and a 0.26 per cent drop on the S&P 500.
