The FTSE 100 opened on Monday with gains - maintaining the optimism of last week's optimism and heading over the 4,400 mark.

At 8:53 BST the index was up 0.68 per cent to 4,418.81 – a rise of 30.06 points.

Leading the gains was Lloyds Banking – up 5.81 per cent to 71.42p.

The lender saw gains after reports in the Telegraph the Northern Rock head Ron Sandler was being lined up to replace Sir Victor Blank as the chairman of Lloyds Banking.

Prudential was up 3.54 per cent, while miners BHP Billiton and Kazakhmys rose 2.88 per cent and 2.84 per cent respectively.

Cable & Wireless gained 2.70 per cent.

Pharma Smith & Nephew fell 1.66 per cent, property giant Hammerson was down 1.38 per cent and TUI Travel fell 0.86 per cent.

British American Tobacco was down 0.73 per cent and British Airways fell 0.66 per cent.

This week in London attention will fall on Thursday's retail sales figures, which are expected to rise, and Friday's GDP figures for the second quarter.
