FTSE 100 up 1.5% with gains for miners

The FTSE 100 was up in early trading today with strong gains for miners.

At 09:06 BST, the index was up 1.55 per cent to 4,454.84 – gaining 67.90 points.

Rio Tinto led the gains up 10.15 per cent, while BHP Billiton rose 9.34 per cent.

Eurasian was up 5.35 per cent, Vedanta rose 5.05 per cent and Antofagasta gained 4.36 per cent, as traders view the mining sector as the backbone of any gains to come.

Insurer Amlin was down 1.99 per cent, property giant Liberty International fell 1.73 per cent and Associated British Foods was down 1.28 per cent.

Gains were sparked as the Dow Jones closed up 0.86 per cent last night and the S&P 500 rose 1.15 per cent.

On the currency, sterling backed down from recent highs.

£1 was down 0.81 per cent to $1.60450 and down 0.98 per cent to €1.13020.
