FTSE 100 up over 1% with gains for miners and Next

The FTSE 100 rose 1.05 per cent this morning – following the momentum of gains in New York last night.

At 09:21 BST, the London index rose to 5,095.30 – a gain of 53.17 points.

This followed a 0.59 per cent rise last night on the Dow.

Morning trading was driven by the commodity stocks.

Tullow Oil rose 3.96 per cent, Eurasian climbed 3.95 per cent and Xstrata was up 3.70 per cent.

Next was up 3.59 per cent after sales figures revealed the retailer was shrugging off the high street downturn.

London Stock Exchange was also up 3.59 per cent.

BAE Systems was down 1.05 per cent this morning, Smiths Group dropped 0.63 per cent and National Grid fell 0.48 per cent.

On the currency markets, sterling was down 0.01 per cent against the dollar to $1.6487 and down 0.34 per cent against the euro to €1.1213 – making €1 worth £0.8916.ADNFCR-1783-ID-19363126-ADNFCR
