FTSE 100 up with gains for commodities

The FTSE 100 started the week rising 0.52 per cent in early trading.

The index was up 24.09 points at 9:02 BST to 4,632.45.

Petrofac led the gains up 8.33 per cent – leading commodity stocks.

Antofagasta rose 4.36 per cent, Randgold was up 4.02 per cent and Kazakhmys gained 3.91 per cent.

Intertek gained 4.62 per cent.

Leading the falls was Aviva, down 1.64 per cent, along with fellow insurer Legal & General down 1.47 per cent.

Smith & Nephew fell 1.49 per cent and Carnival was down 1.38 per cent.

Much attention this week will fall on the banks.

Barclays has already reported a £3 billion profit pushing its share price up 4.20 per cent to 315p.

This week also sees results from HSBC, Lloyds Banking, nationalised Northern Rock, and Standard Chartered.

On the currency markets, sterling was up 0.49 per cent against the dollar to $1.6794 and up 0.62 per cent against the euro to €1.1796.
