FTSE up despite AstraZeneca slump

The FTSE 100 rose 0.34 per cent, or 18.13 points, in early trading on Wednesday despite a sharp drop in AstraZeneca shares.

The pharmaceutical giant was hit in markets across Europe as its stock went ex-dividend, while it was also knocked by concerns over negative clinical trial results for it latest bowel cancer drug Recentin.

On the leading share index in London the group was down 3.22 per cent by 09:26 GMT.

BAE Systems, Whitbread, Sage Group, Johnson Mathey, Schroders and Cobham were all down between 1.06 per cent and 1.56 per cent meanwhile.

Leading the gains was Standard Life, which was up 3.69 per cent, with mobile satellite group Inmarsat and generator firm Aggreko up 3.68 per cent and 2.92 per cent respectively.

Also on the rise were Lloyds Banking Group, Kazakhmys, Xstrata and Barclays PLC, which rose between 2.07 per cent and 2.36 per cent.ADNFCR-1783-ID-19594084-ADNFCR
