Government rolls out boiler scrappage scheme

Tuesday 5th January 2010

The government has today announced the launch of its boiler scrappage scheme, which it says will help households save money on fuel bills.

Prime minister Gordon Brown and energy secretary Ed Miliband claim the scheme could save homes as much as £200 a year on their energy bills.

The 'cash for boilers' scheme, announced in the pre-Budget report by chancellor Alistair Darling, aims to boost jobs by "sustaining work for the 130,000 installers" and boiler manufacturers, as well as saving carbon and money.

The government said today up to 125,000 households in England with working 'G-rated' boilers can now apply through the Energy Saving Trust (EST) for a voucher which will entitle them to £400 off the price of a new, modern 'A-rated' boiler or a renewable heating system like a biomass boiler or a heat pump.

Upgrading a boiler, could cut a household's energy bill by between £200 to £235 a year, the government added. Mr Brown said: "Today's announcement will slash household energy bills and carbon emissions while providing an important boost for the British heating industry."

To qualify households need to have a working G-rated boiler. It is likely to be G-rated if it is more than 15 years old. If a boiler qualifies for replacement, a qualified installer will then charge anything between around £2,000 and £3,000 for an upgraded boiler. If everything including quote, work done etc. is in order, the EST will then refund £400 to the household.

Mr Miliband said: "The boiler scrappage scheme will save around £200 off heating bills per year for families that are replacing their old boilers, and in total will save the same amount of carbon equivalent to taking around 45,000 cars off the road."

"We know that people will act on larger energy efficiency measures like replacing boilers when they are both good for the environment and cost effective for them. They also need to be able to trust the claims that are made around energy efficiency measures," Fraser Winterbottom, chief operating officer, EST added.ADNFCR-1783-ID-19539199-ADNFCR
