Huge Barclays profit announcement helps FTSE 100 soar

The FTSE 100 rose an impressive 1.48 per cent on Tuesday after Barclays announced a 92 per cent rise in annual profits last year.At the close of play the London index stood at 5,244.06, a rise of 76.59 points.
On the back of the revelation it made £11.6 billion profit in 2009, Barclays led the gains up 6.8 per cent to 293.75p at the end of the day.
The banking sector as a whole performed strongly with Royal Bank of Scotland Group up 5.25 per cent to 33.26p and Lloyds Banking Group rising 4.7 per cent to 49p.
InterContinental Hotels Group suffered the biggest loss of the day, falling 2.93 per cent, with Imperial Tobacco Group also down 1.72 per cent.
