Hundreds left stranded after Eurostar train breaks down

Monday 22nd February 2010

Eurostar officials have begun investigating yet another breakdown which left over 700 people stranded in darkness on Sunday night.

The Paris to London service suffered a power failure just south of Ashford, in Kent, at around 22:45 GMT yesterday.

The hundreds of passengers were then forced to climb down ladders onto the tracks in the dark and climb into a replacement service.

A spokeswoman for Euorstar said the rail operator did not yet know the cause of the "major technical problem".

"We don't know exactly what happened or why at the moment. We are investigating fully", she said, adding: "We are truly sorry for any discomfort caused."

Passengers onboard the train on Sunday night have reported stifling temperatures inside the carriages during the power failure, with toilets also not working and staff struggling to find the emergency lighting.

The replacement service eventually arrived in London's St Pancreas just after 02:30 GMT on Monday morning, over four-and-a-half hours late.

The incident is the latest embarrassing incident for Eurostar after breakdowns over the Christmas period left thousands of people stranded for days on end.

A series of trains broke down due to the severe winter conditions, with some stuck inside the Channel Tunnel for many hours.ADNFCR-1783-ID-19627876-ADNFCR
