Lloyds Banking Group to cut further 2,113 jobs

Tuesday 30th June 2009

Lloyds Banking Group has announced it will be slashing a further 2,113 jobs over the next three years.

The group said these changes would be mitigated by the creation of 350 new roles.

The union Unite have said it was "astonished" by the cuts, which brings the total number of job losses made by Lloyds since January to 7,000.

Rob MacGregor, Unite national officer, said: "Unite is astonished that the Lloyds Banking Group is to make a further 2,113 job cuts. As a taxpayer supported organisation, real questions need to be asked as to how far this bank can be allowed to go in this systematic slashing of staff.

"Morale is now truly low as employees across Lloyds are in a permanent state of anxiety as they see their employer announce hundreds of job losses every week. This Labour government can not afford to turn the other way as bank workers across the country are losing their jobs."

Some 43 per cent of Lloyds is owned by UK taxpayers, following a merger last year. Of the jobs lost, 700 will be cut through "natural attrition", according to Lloyds.

Mark Fisher, director of group operations at Lloyds Banking Group said: "By bringing the businesses together, we will be better placed for the future.

"Regrettably however, some of our colleagues will be affected by our plans. We understand that this difficult news will be unsettling and we will be working closely with those colleagues affected."ADNFCR-1783-ID-19243075-ADNFCR
