London markets close at 21-month high on Tuesday

The stock market in London closed at a 21-month high on Tuesday, with Cairn Energy leading the gainers.The FTSE 100 was up 29.09 points, or 0.52 per cent, at 5,673.63 at end of trading today, with a strong energy sector adding while Kingfisher was the biggest drag.
Also weighing on the shares index was Home Retail Group, which shed 2.45 per cent, while BAE Systems and Unilever also dragged.
Cairn Energy led the blue-chip gainers, up by 7.95 per cent after a strong day, while Legal and General added 4.67 per cent after posting better than expected results today.
Tim Breedon, group chief executive, said following the results: "These results show that Legal & General is in excellent health and is ideally placed to take advantage of new opportunities as they emerge in a financial services sector which is undergoing rapid change."
Banks also gained with Barclays, Standard Chartered, Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds Banking Group all up between 0.6 and 3.1 per cent.
