Lufthansa pilots begin four-day strike over pay and job security

Monday 22nd February 2010

Around 3,000 Lufthansa flights have been cancelled after the airline's pilots' union went on strike after negotiations over pay and job security collapsed.

The four-day industrial action began at 23:00 GMT on Sunday night with more than 4,000 pilots working for Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cargo and Germanwings all walking out.

The strike action comes on the same day as British Airways cabin crew are expected to announce the outcome of a strike ballot.

Lufthansa has warned of serious delays to domestic and international flights, claiming the industrial action could cost the airline around €25 million (£21.9 million) every day.

Pilots from the Cockpit union have called for 6.4 per cent pay rise, more of a say in company decisions and commitments that pilots would keep their jobs when Lufthansa shifts passengers to cheaper foreign affiliates.ADNFCR-1783-ID-19628433-ADNFCR
