Mining worries send FTSE 100 down again

Tuesday 12th January 2010

The FTSE 100 fell by 0.71 per cent on Tuesday following concerns in the mining sector.

At the close of play the London index stood at 5,498.71, a drop of 39.36 points.

Silver miner Fresnillo witnessed the biggest loss of the day, falling 5.16 per cent to 808p.

Lonmin also experienced a significant drop, slipping 4.08 per cent.

The falls were linked to the disappointing reports from Alcoa, the world's biggest aluminium producer, with oil company Chevron also claiming its fourth quarter results would be significantly lower compared to previous three months.

After leading the gains in early trading on the back of a strong Christmas, Tesco rose by just 0.75 per cent on Tuesday.

The biggest winners were Land Securities Group, up 1.54 per cent, and Wolseley, up 1.47 per cent.ADNFCR-1783-ID-19553621-ADNFCR
