People with credit card debt 'should seek help'

People with credit card debt 'should seek help'Friday 28th November 2008

Consumers struggling to pay their credit card debts should solicit advice to help tackle the problem, according to Apacs.

The industry body for the credit card industry said that people in difficulty can always speak to their card provider or enlist the help of a debt agency if their unpaid bills are mounting up.

"Through the banking code any customer in this position can expect to be treated sympathetically and fairly," it said.

Apacs released the statement after members of the credit card industry met with business secretary Lord Mandelson in London yesterday (November 26th).

Card providers have agreed to give struggling borrowers more "breathing space" to make arrangements for paying off debts in the future.

One option available to people with financial difficulties is taking out an IVA, which prevents the "stigma" of declaring bankruptcy, the Times reported recently.
