Relationship breakdowns 'cause debt problems'

Relationship breakdowns 'cause debt problems'Tuesday 17th February 2009

The end of a serious relationship can often lead people into financial difficulty, a British charity has claimed.

According to Elizabeth Finn Care, debt is one of the main causes of family breakdowns in the UK and the fallout from a divorce or separation often has severe financial as well as emotional implications.

Research carried out by the charity for Valentine's Day found that nine million couples believe that money worries have put their relationship under strain in the past year.

"The breakdown of a relationship can cause huge pressure financially and can be the reason why many people fall into irreparable debt," said Elizabeth Finn Care's Rebecca Ward.

"In the current economic climate, we fear that the number of people who fall into debt because of relationship breakdown will increase even more."

PayPal recently published a survey which found that 32 per cent of British couples are arguing more this year as a result of the recession, while 80 per cent of couples now keep separate bank accounts.
