Retail sales rise in April

Tuesday 12th May 2009

Retail sales rose sharply in April, compared to figures a year ago, it has been confirmed.

The value of sales rose 4.6 per cent on a like-for-like basis and rose 6.3 per cent on a total basis, last month, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC).

Experts however, have warned that the figures need to be treated "cautiously", due to Easter falling in April this year, as well as the good weather, making annual comparisons difficult.

The BRC has also warned there may be worse to come in terms of retail sales if unemployment continues to rise.

BRC's director general Stephen Robertson said: "With unemployment set to grow through the rest of the year, mounting jobs worries will hold back spending for some time."ADNFCR-1783-ID-19163930-ADNFCR
