Rio Tinto executive 'admits taking bribes' at Shanghai trial

Monday 22nd March 2010

Australian national Stern Hu, an executive of the mining giant Rio Tinto, is reported to have pleaded guilty to bribe-taking at a trial in Shanghai.

Mr Hu stands accused with three Chinese Rio Tinto colleagues of bribery and commercial espionage charges, and although foreign reporters are not allowed onto the trial, reports from Shanghai have quoted an Australian diplomat as saying Mr Hu made some admissions to bribery.

The three Chinese employees - Liu Caikui, Ge Minqiang and Wang Yong - and Mr Hu were detained last July over the corruption accusations. They stand accused of accepting about $12 million in bribes and also stealing commercial secrets from Chinese state-owned companies.

Their trial is expected to last three days.

Mr Hu was Rio Tinto's lead negotiator in the talks with Chinese steel mills to try to settle a price for China to buy iron ore from Australian mining companies. It is believed at least one of the three other Rio Tinto employees has admitted to taking bribes.

The case has put strain on relations between Australia and China and if found guilty, the four accused could face lengthy jail terms. ADNFCR-1783-ID-19681143-ADNFCR
