Rio Tinto trial ends in China without a verdict

Wednesday 24th March 2010

The trial of four employees of mining giant Rio Tinto in China has ended without a verdict, lawyers have said.

The Shanghai hearing, which involved Australian national Stern Hu, concerned allegations that the four men had accepted bribes, as well as being charged with secrets theft.

So far no verdict has been given in the trial – which ended today – although the men are believed to have pleaded guilty to some of the accusations of bribery, though they have disputed the amounts involved.

Rio Tinto, which is based in London and Melbourne, is one of the leading suppliers of ore to China and one of the most profitable foreign companies operating in the country.

No jury is involved in the trial of the four men – three of whom are Chinese nationals - which will be decided by a three-judge panel. Australia's foreign minister, Stephen Smith, told the Australian Broadcasting Corp that it could be a "matter of days" before a verdict is announced.

In addition to Mr Hu, the Rio Tinto employees are Liu Caikui, Ge Minqiang and Wang Yong. ADNFCR-1783-ID-19686140-ADNFCR
