Row between Google and China deepens

Wednesday 20th January 2010

Google has delayed the launch of two mobile phones in China as the dispute over government censorship continues to rumble on.

The phones, produced with partners Samsung and Motorola and featuring Google's Android operating system, had been due to be unveiled on Wednesday but a company statement released yesterday confirmed the launch had been postponed.

The news comes just days after the search engine admitted it was considering abandoning its Chinese operation after hackers targeted the e-mail accounts of human rights activist; attacks which are believed to have originated in China.

As a result, the US company declared it could no longer censor its results in China and may have to shut down operations in the country.

In response, Beijing announced Google and all other foreign firms operating in China must obey its laws.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu declared: "Foreign firms in China should respect China's laws and regulations, and respect China's public customs and traditions, and assume the corresponding social responsibilities, and of course Google is no exception."

China Unicom had been due to operate as the network provider in the country for the new phones postponed by Google.

The announcement came as foreign journalists working in China alleged to have been the latest victims of the cyber attacks.ADNFCR-1783-ID-19564998-ADNFCR
