Sainsbury's confirms record Christmas sales
Thursday 7th January 2010
Sainsbury's has revealed details of its record Christmas performance in 2009, with total sales for the third quarter (Q3) up 6.2 per cent. The UK supermarket posted Q3 results showing like-for like sales were up 3.8 per cent, and weekly transactions were up one million year on year.
Sainsbury's said in its announcement that it was able to offer permanent roles to 1,000 staff recruited for temporary roles over Christmas, and said the Nectar card was "increasingly important" in driving sales.
Justin King, chief executive, said: "Sainsbury's has delivered a strong trading performance over the past 13 weeks resulting in like-for-like sales growth, excluding fuel, of 3.7 per cent, or 4.2 per cent VAT adjusted.
"Our strategy of delivering great food at fair prices has resulted in a record Christmas performance, completing a strong third quarter on top of good growth last year. While food price inflation eased in the quarter as expected, a winning combination of more customers, enjoying even better products and prices through more stores delivered total sales growth of 6.2 per cent.
"Our complementary non-food range grew at over four times the rate of food in the quarter. Investment in infrastructure has enabled a substantive step up in the execution of marketing led events, such as Halloween, toys and entertainment as well as good growth in clothing and Christmas ranges. Our 'January Sale' has also started well."
At 10:15 GMT the supermarket was doing well on Britain's leading stock index, up 1.79 per cent following its Q3 statement.
This week both John Lewis, and sister company Waitrose, and Marks and Spencer posted strong Christmas sales, with M&S saying food sales were particularly strong.
