Stressed Brits 'under pressure from debt'

Stressed Brits 'under pressure from debt'Tuesday 11th November 2008

A growing number of people in the UK are struggling with debts which have a detrimental effect on their health, it has been claimed.

Lisa Rodrigues, chief executive of the Sussex Partnership NHS Trust, said that the credit crunch has exacerbated existing debt problems in her area, with many people finding it difficult to manage bills, mortgage payments and other expenses.

As a result, the number of people with debt-related health issues is on the rise, she told the Argus newspaper.

"We are already seeing increased demands for our services as people struggle to cope," Ms Rodrigues said.

Mark Almond, director of the North Tyneside Citizens Advice Bureau, recently expressed a similar view.

Commenting on the nature of recent inquiries in the north-east, he told the News Guardian: "The amount of people who have health worries … as a result of money problems is unbelievable."

Recent figures from the Insolvency Service indicate that more British people are taking out IVAs to tackle their debts – the number of IVAs rose by 3.3 per cent in the third quarter of 2008.
