T-Mobile and Orange are merging their UK businesses to create a market-leading giant with a 28.4 million-strong customer base, it has been announced. The mobile phone firms' continental owners confirmed on Tuesday a 50-50 joint venture had been agreed.
The announcement from France Telecom, which owns Orange in the UK, and Deutsche Telekom, which owns T-Mobile UK, means the new group will leapfrog O2, owned by Telefonica, and Vodafone, to become the biggest mobile phone company in Britain.
The merged group, which would retain separate branding for 18 months, will have a 37 per cent share of the UK mobile market and revenue of 9.4 billion (£7.7 billion) on 2008 levels.
Timotheus Hottges, chief financial officer of Deutsche Telekom, said the future was "clear and strong".
His France Telecom counterpart Gervais Pellissier said a "well positioned player" would be borne out of the merger.
Orange chief executive Tom Alexander is due to lead the new group, while T-Mobile UK boss Richard Moat will be its chief operating officer.
