Times website to start charging users from June

Friday 26th March 2010

The Times and Sunday Times newspapers will start charging users of their websites from June, it has been confirmed today.

Users will be charged £1 a day for access to the sites and £2 for a week's subscription for access to both.

In a statement released on Friday, News International chief executive, Rebekah Brooks, said the charges could be soon implemented on its other British titles, including the Sun and the News of the World.

"This is just the start. The Times and the Sunday Times are the first of our four titles in the UK to move to this new approach," she said.

"These new sites, and the apps that will enhance the experience, reflect the identity of our titles and deliver a terrific experience for readers. We expect to attract a growing base of loyal customers that are committed and engaged with our titles."

It's expected the papers will relaunch their sites in May, with access offered to registered users for a free trial period.

The media industry will be monitoring the success of News International's decision with great interest, with many suggesting it represents a high risk strategy by Rupert Murdoch's organisation given the huge amount of free content available.

The Australian said back in August 2009 he planned on introducing charges to all his titles and has threatened to remove the sites from Google's search index in an attempt to encourage people to pay.

With newspaper sales in continuing decline, companies are constantly trying to find new and better ways of making money from their online content.ADNFCR-1783-ID-19690784-ADNFCR
