UK car production up 28.6% in June, SMMT figures show

Thursday 22nd July 2010

Car production in the UK rose sharply last month, up by 28.6 per cent according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The SMMT said that over the year to date production was up by 55 per cent.

In June commercial vehicle output rose by 24.9 per cent and 49.6 per cent in first six months. UK engine production was up 18.1 per cent over the month and by 35.3 per cent over the year-to-date.

"UK automotive production rose in June with steady improvement across the car, commercial vehicle and engine sectors against a weak 2009," said SMMT chief executive, Paul Everitt.

"Continued investment in new products and technology is helping to sustain growth for the sector while rising demand from export and home markets is maintaining momentum. The coming months remain uncertain and sustaining economic recovery in major markets around the world remains the industry's top priority."

The figures were deemed "encouraging" by motor trade analysts, given that the scrappage scheme, which had boosted demand, is now over.ADNFCR-1783-ID-19903023-ADNFCR
