Unemployment in UK falls but part-time workers increasing

Wednesday 14th July 2010

Figures out this morning showed unemployment fell in the three months to May, but this may be due to a significant increase in part-time workers.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said for the quarter unemployment fell by 34,000 to 2.47 million, while those claiming Jobseeker's Allowance fell in June by 20,800 to 1.46million.

While the number of people in work rose, the increase was in part down to a record 148,000 rise in the number of part-time workers. The ONS said the percentage of workers in part-time jobs was 27 per cent, it's highest since records began in 1992.

Overall the number of people in part-time employment was 7.82 million in the three months to May 2010, up 148,000 from the three months to February 2010. Of this total, 1.94 million were men and 5.87 million were women

Howard Archer chief UK and European economist at IHS Global Insight said following the release of the statistics: "While the latest labour market data is broadly encouraging, we have significant concerns about the jobs outlook.

"Unemployment may very well continue to fall in the near term, but there is a very real danger that it will start to head back up later this year and then increase in 2011. Major job losses are on the way in the public sector as the government slashes spending, and we doubt that the private sector will be able to fully compensate for this."
