Unemployment rises to 2.49 million

Unemployment in the UK rose to 2.49 million in October, official figures released today have revealed.The Office for National Statistics data shows between August and October unemployment rose by 21,000.
But the figures also show the number of benefit claimants fell by 6,300 last month.
The official unemployment rate now stands at 7.9 per cent.
The number of unemployed young people, aged between 16 and 24, rose to 952,000, the highest figure since records began 17 years ago, ONS stats show.
The government yesterday unveiled a youth unemployment white paper in a bid to get more young people back in work.
Gordon Brown and work and pensions secretary Yvette Cooper announced 100,000 new jobs, apprenticeships and training opportunities for under-25s would be created next year.
